Get a modern modem helper
Need to be mobile? Get a satellite modem device.Get modern, join the g modem device area.
Today a modem can be anything from cable or DSL networking modems, to a satellite modem or a g modem.
A satellite modem will connect u all over the world.
Another good modem helper when u are "out in the field" is a g modem connected to ur notebook. The g modem standard has become very popular in recent years, and is now the preferred mobile modem device. This page will however focus on only computer networking modem devices like cable and DSL as your modem helper.
A cable modem helper is a type of modem device that provides access to a data signal sent over the cable television infrastructure. Cable modems are primarily used to deliver broadband Internet access in the form of cable internet, taking advantage of unused bandwidth on a cable television network.
ADSL modem helper or DSL modem helper is a modem device used to connect a single computer or router to a DSL phone line, in order to use an ADSL service. Like other modems it is a type of transceiver.

Bluescreens Windows 7 and VistaI bought this as a low-priced alternative to some of the bigger names out there, but I should have just shelled out the extra money. I've installed this on both Vista and Windows 7 and I admit the installation was easier on Windows 7. Windows 7 recognized it right away as a Realtek card and installed drivers. Vista was not so fortunate as I had to put in a disc to make it work. Regardless, after the adapter has been running a few hours, the machine bluescreens. Over the course of a day, this can happen 2-3 times.
In addition, it only provides a fraction of the available throughput of my Linksys adapter. I replaced this adapter with a Linksys PCI card and the PCI card has no issue using the full 54Mbps provided by the G protocal. This card, however, hovers between 11Mbps and 36Mbps. Same location, same power output from my WRT54G router. Granted, this is probably to do with the internal antenna on this adapter vs the external antenna on my Linksys card, but it knocks the adapter again in my book.
Also, I think the heat dissipation is poor on this adapter which is probably it's primary problem. It gets warm. Too warm. That coupled with the fact that my desktops are typically active 20-24 hours per day, makes this a poor alternative for a desktop or a frequently-on laptop. I strongly suggest spending the money on something else.
As a Windows 7 user, I wasn't satisfied with this adapter because I planned to use it for more than just a few hours at a time. It's frequent bluescreen causing malfunctions were more than irritating.
As a Vista user, my experience with this card was even more frustrating. The adapter was difficult to connect and wouldn't stay connected. Plus, it too bluescreens frequently.
General feeling: Stay away from this product, no matter what the price. Thank goodness I only spent $15 on it.

Works Great for WD HD Live TV boxGot this for the WD HD live tv box.
I first tried a trendnet dongle - didn't work at all. Had to return it.
This *tiny* Buffalo Nfiniti worked right out of the box. Truly just plug and play. Great signal, no issues at all. Has been using it for over 6 weeks now.
I also plugged it in to my laptop just to test it: no hitch either.
Overall: Highly recommended

Great product! Great Seller! Great Service! everything great....i got the package super fast. the packaging was awesome and the product worked well out of the box! no complains what so ever. A+++ for the seller and his service via amazon.
i was worried that buying old modems will be a problem: I have Comcast service, and if this modem was previously given out by the company, the serial no. is recorded. The logic of I trying to save some money by having my own modem would not work as Comcast would show that it is a company issued modem. A lot of people sell their modems, but no one really tells you: 1. if they are selling a rented modem. 2. Was this modem on a previous company 3. did they buy the modem or got it from their ISP.
So, I had to keep my fingers crossed until the modem arrived and check it while i was on the phone with Comcast customer service.
It went through well, and I am extremely happy as I save a lot of money!! $5/month for rental fee is ridiculous. This guy can work on DOC SYS v2.0 also which is way faster for my needs and use. I am on DOC SYS v1.0 and its more than what i need.
SO, if you are a home user, student or someone who is tired of paying the ISP's stupid rental fee, then go for this option! it is cheap and above all will give you piece of mind and relief on your pockets. More money for beer now!

complex installationThe Linksys by Cisco Router arrived very quickly.I began the installation process by placing the installation disk into my P.C. The download process included the addition of numerous options that I did not want. I stopped the process and removed the disk. Unfortunately, the program had already altered my computer files even though I wasn't given any option to refuse the download of these other programs. At this point I had to contact a professional who corrected the problems. The router is now working correctly.

Hardware is good; software -- not so muchThe vendor-supplied software wasn't as functional as I'd like; limited use of the available storage space, reduced configuration and so on.
The ease of installing the dd-wrt software was ridiculously easy. The only problem relates to the design of the 'reset' button. The third-party software installation requires extended (90 seconds!) pressing-time on the reset button -- two or three times during the process. The button is difficult to hold for that length of time.
But that's probably a good thing, because it means the settings don't easily get wiped by accident.
The other problem I had was with one of the antenna mounts -- the post the antenna screws-down on, that exits the body of the device: One was loose, and not affixed well. It floated in a way that didn't make me comfortable. A drop or two of cyanoacrylate glue ('Super Glue') easily fixed it, but that's not something I think I would need to do right-out-of-the-box. Points off for that.
One design suggestion: I'd like to see mounting holes on the bottom so one could easily wall-mount this device. As it is, the footprint takes up usable space on my desk.
Good wireless router, though. I like it.

Great, Inexpensive Wireless RouterI found the router to be very good for what I needed. I was looking for a small wired router that I could plug 2 security cameras into and a computer and a cable modem.
The features are great. It has a routing feature that allows you to assign public ports and forward them to private internal ports and IP's, allowing you to set up multiple servers, or cameras, or FTP's or whatever.
Highly recommended.

Setup fails in Windows 7 but Router works. Abysmal support.I'm running Windows 7 and the setup utility for the router gives a failure message and tells you to push the reset button and try again. Pushing the reset button and trying setup again does not work. However if you ignore the message, don't push the reset button and just start using the router after running setup it works! Tech support was unreachable in a reasonable amount of time. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. There is no firmware revision beyond what came with the router anyway (version 4.5). The router does work with my PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 game consoles so far. I bought this more expensive router because it is a name brand and I expected professional support if I needed it. With this lack of support and apparent incompatability with Windows 7 I should have bought the cheaper router at 1/3 the price. They both are made in China anyway. Apparently the hardware is good but the setup software, firmware and tech support are abysmal.
